Ranchi, Jharkhand, June 11, 2015 :: The Department of Drinking Water & Sanitation and UNICEF Jharkhand organized an Open Defecation Free (ODF) celebration in South Tundul Gram Panchayat, Nagri Block in Ranchi district today.

 DWSD brand ambassador and UNICEF celebrity supporter Ms. Deepika Kumari was invited as the chief guest for the programme. She said, “I am pleased to see women take the lead in this mission to make the panchayat open defecation free. All households in this panchayat have improved toilets. I urge all especially the youngsters to join in this mission to make Jharkhand open defecation free.”

 Under Swach Bharat Mission, Rs 12,000 per household was provided to the Village Water & Sanitation Committee (VWSC) in the panchayat. Today, all 1010 households in the Laved & Tundul villages of South Tundul Gram Panchayat have a toilet in their premises.Ramesh Kumar, Chief Engineer, PMU said, “As announced earlier by the Government of Jharkhand, in villages declared open defecation free, piped water supply scheme will be initiated on a priority basis. Tundul Panchayat will soon benefit from this scheme.”

 UNICEF along with the NGO partner ACE,mobilized the community and brought all stakeholders on a common platform. Kumar Premchand, Water & Sanitation Specialist, UNICEF Jharkhand said, “More than 1,000 toilets have been constructed in this panchayat in the last 8 months. UNICEF has been involved in the capacity building of the Jalsahiya, VWSC& PRI members who have played a crucial role in mobilizing the community and generating a demand for toilets.”

 Zila Parishad President (Sundari Tirkey); Chief Engineer (Ramesh Kumar); Director PMU (Swetabh Kumar); Executive Engineer PMU (Shishir Soren) among others participated in the celebrations.
