Ranchi, Jharkhand | August  | Tuesday |18, 2015 :: The Department of HRD & Drinking Water & Sanitation with UNICEF support launched the “Swachh Vidyalaya, Swasth Bachhe” Programme here today.

The programme began with an address by UNICEF child reporters 11 year old Kiran Kumari and 13 year old Rahul Roy from Government Middle Schools of Nagri & Ratu in Ranchi. They spoke about the importance of handwashing; toilet use and safe drinking water and shared their experiences in spreading the hygiene and sanitation message amongst their peers and family.

Raghubar Das, Chief Minister, Jharkhand said, “I am guided by Mahatma Gandhi’s dream of a swachh village with healthy and educated citizens. I appeal to all teachers, DSEs, BEEOs and other government officials to help realize this dream by creating model schools and villages.”

He urged the HRD department to organize a daily 30 minute session for children in schools on various issues such as sanitation and hygiene practices, etc. He said, “Children are agents of change and they can carry the sanitation and hygiene messages back to their family and community. The SMC can support this effort by monitoring the activities in the village and mobilizing the community to create a swachh village.”

Dr. Neera Yadav, Minister, Department of HRD said, “The state can progress only when its citizens are healthy. This can be possible if sanitation and hygiene practices are adopted by all. School children can be messengers and brand ambassadors for the Swachh Vidyalaya and the national Swachh Bharat initiative. Various activities are lined up during the month long programme and I urge all teachers, SMC, children, development partners and the media to support the programme and make it a success.”

Ms. Aradhana Patnaik, Secretary, Department of HRD said, “All government schools in Jharkhand have toilets for boys and girls in Jharkhand. This has been made possible because of the convergence between departments and the work at the ground level by teachers, SMCs, development partners and PSUs. The challenge is the use and maintenance of these toilets for which the role of the Bal Sansad members and teachers becomes very important.”

Dr. Madhulika Jonathan, Chief UNICEF Jharkhand said, “Any child centered programme or initiative can be successful only if the children are brought on board, consulted and provided a platform to voice their opinion on that issue. Child participation and empowerment is critical to the success of any campaign.”

The programme was attended by teachers, DSEs, BEEOs, NGO partners amongst others.
