He was Born in a very humble background of a middle class family, He had an inclination for volunteering from a very young age. His formal induction in social service started as a ‘Pracharak’(organizer) of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a socio-cultural organization, dedicated to the service of the nation. After serving in the RSS for about a decade and a half, he entered mainstream politics in 1987. He is the Chief Minister of Gujarat since October 2001, under his leadership his party has won two Assembly elections with massive majority in 2002 and 2007 and several local body elections at various levels.
