Make Panchayats Child Friendly :: Moira Dawa [ Communication Officer, UNICEF ]

Ranchi, Jharkhand, May 14, 2015 :: A day long orientation on child rights and the Child Reporters’ programme was organized for Panchayati Raj Institution (PRI) members by UNICEF on 12 and 14 May in Ranchi.

PRI members are the link between the community and the Government and have an important role to ensure schemes related to children reach every household in every village. Communities and decision makers such as PRI members can protect children from rights abuses. The orientation programme sought to give PRI members knowledge about the child reporters’ programme &child protection issues. It sought their support in protectingchildren from rights abuses.Ms. Moira Dawa, Communication Officer, UNICEF said, “We call on PRI members to make their panchayats child friendly Panchayats. You can support child rights by raising children’s issues in the Gram Sabha, Panchayat Samiti and Zilla Parishad meetings. You can make your Panchayat a model panchayats in the state with 100% birth registration, institutional delivery, immunization coverage, school enrolment; and by eliminating open defecation, malnutrition among children, child marriage, child labour and child trafficking in your villages.”Jaywanti Tirkey, member of Panchayat Samiti in Angara said, “I plan to organize a special gram sabha to orient parents on child rights and a bal sammelan for children and young people to raise their awareness about violence and abuse. We will ensure no child marriage is solemnized in our village and if any such case is reported we shall counsel the parents and if they do not agree, the help of the law enforcement agencies will be sought.”

A number of suggestions were brought forth by the participants during the workshop including weekly hygiene and sanitation campaigns; orientation of villagers on health, nutrition, sanitation and protection issues during gram sabha; mata baithaks & SHG meetings; monthly monitoring of schools; and celebration of Kishore-Kishori Diwas to empower children with information about violence/abuse and protection measures available for them.UNICEF supports the Child Reporters programme in 6 districts – Ranchi, East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum, Simdega, Giridih & Latehar. The programme seeks to increase child participation in issues related to their well-being. It also creates a forum for children’s voices to be heard.

The programme was attended by Satish Girija, President, Nav Bharat Jagriti Kendra (NBJK) and over 60 PRI members from across Ranchi.
