Ranchi, 20 November 2023: Iconic landmark, the Raj Bhavan in Ranchi turned blue to mark World Children’s Day today, on the anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, to which India is a signatory, symbolizing unwavering solidarity with the rights of children everywhere.
The World Children’s Day is UNICEF’s Global Day of Action for children, by children, and annually commemorates the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child – the world’s most ratified human rights treaty. To mark the occasion, iconic public buildings and heritage monuments throughout India lit up in blue, in symbolic support of child rights.
Hon’ble Governor of Jharkhand, Shri C.P. Radhakrishnan said, “I’m proud to add my voice to all those children around the world who are asking for solutions for today’s problems, which are linked with safety, adolescent empowerment, access to education, mental health and protection. Raj Bhawan’s luminous tribute serves as a beacon, urging citizens to join the collective effort to ensure a safe and nurturing environment for Jharkhand’s children. The anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child on World Children’s Day is a cannot-miss opportunity for the society collectively, to set the agenda and speak loudly for the universality of child rights.”
Dr. Kaninika Mitra, Chief, UNICEF Jharkhand said, “This year’s World Children’s Day theme, Adolescent Empowerment through Gender Lens underscores the importance of fostering an inclusive environment, free from all forms of discrimination, with a focus on gender equality. The initiative seeks to raise awareness for children so that they have their basic rights to health care, nutrition, education, and protection. Our renewed emphasis on safeguarding every child’s right is crucial, highlighting our collective responsibility for a safer, fairer future for girls and boys everywhere.”
World Children’s Day, marked by actions led by children, commemorates the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. It provides a platform for children and young people to voice their concerns and advocate for issues that impact their lives.
As Raj Bhawan goes blue, it stands not just as a symbol but as a call to action—to unite and make children realize their own rights and make this world a better place for them to live in.
In Delhi, the Rashtrapati Bhavan (President Building), the Parliament House, Prime Minister’s Office (North and South Block), Qutub Minar – a heritage monument, along with the India Gate and UN Offices lit up in blue lights. #GoBlue is a symbolic expression that has yielded tremendous results over years in drawing much-needed attention to rights #ForEveryChild in India and globally.
