Ranchi, Jharkhand | January | 05, 2023 :: Birsa Agricultural University (BAU) Vice Chancellor Dr Onkar Nath Singh said role of statistics is very important in drawing scientific conclusions as statistical tools effectively manage the large data sets, making data processing more convenient.
Inaugurating three-day workshop on ‘Basic data analysis using statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS) software at Ranchi Veterinary College (RVC) on Thursday, he said SPSS is useful for both quantitative and qualitative data and offers reliable and fast answers. The VC urged the working and retired professors of RVC to find effective ways of overcoming the shortage of regular faculty in the college. The workshop has been organized by Department of Animal Genetics and Breeding of BAU.
Eminent animal geneticist and former Director Research Dr DK Singh Dron said a lot of good statistical software packages are available for data processing and analysis and researchers need to be very cautious while designing experiments and treatments. He stressed that animal breeders should be sent to Indian Agricultural Statistics Research Institute (IASRI) for training on statistical tools and Department of AGB should regularly conduct such training interactive workshops.
Dean, Faculty of Veterinary Sciences Dr Sushil Prasad said that objective of the workshop is to understand the basics of SPSS and its application in research work, give hands on experience in statistical technique and interpret the results of the output. He said that revival and upgradation of the existing Molecular and Cytogenetics Laboratory of Department of Animal Genetics & Breeding (AGB) will be undertaken soon.
Dr MS Malik, Dean, Faculty of Forestry and Principal Investigator of National Agricultural Higher Education Project (NAHEP) said that NAHEP will extend all help and financial support to scientists and PG students interested in attending training/ workshops at country’s leading agricultural research institutes.
Proposing a vote of thanks, Coordinator of workshop Dr Nandani Kumari said the workshop would equip the PG students and teachers to solve research problems in a more logical and scientific manner. Dr Manjari Pandey anchored the event.
The programme was planned and designed by AGB department teachers Dr Nandani Kumari, Dr Absar Ahmad, Dr Thanesh Oraon and Dr Manjari Pandey under the guidance of Dean Dr Sushil Prasad.
