XISS Ranchi :: Diamond Jubilee Festivities – Day 2Ranchi, Jharkhand | February | Wednesday | 15, 2017 :: The second day was divided into two main segments. First part of which was the ”International Conference on Management Education for Sustainable World”. It was inaugurated with a welcome speech by Dr. Fr. Alexius Ekka SJ. Prof. James Stoner was the keynote speaker of the event. Students from all departments presented their papers, each with a different theme.
The inaugural ceremony started with lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries. Dr. Fr. Alexius Ekka SJ, Director, XISS presented the welcome address. He mentioned that the students have understood the value of sustainability in different domain. Management education in XISS has been etched in the vision-mission of the institute in the form of working towards creating a just, equitable, and humane society in which underprivileged people get their rightful place. Prof. R. K. Agarwal introduced Prof. James Stoner’s achievements that are around 12 published journals and handbooks and a yet to be finished novel. The most remarkable phase was the group exercise conducted by Prof. Stoner to know others and to build effective teams. This was followed by an interactive question-answer round where the students and the faculty members had their queries related to management and sustainability answered.

The session for the paper presentation of Dept. of HRM began with Prof. Mary Bodra welcoming the Chairperson and Speaker with bouquet presentation. The Chairperson of the event Nadeem Kazim, Former Director-HR, Exide and Former Chairman CII-HR and Eastern India introduced the theme to audience. The theme of Human Resource Dept. was “HRM for a Sustainable World”.
He expressed his delight of coming back to his alma-mater and explained how every time he’s here, he tries to relate the knowledge he gained during his studies here to its relevance with today’s scenario. He linked how his learnings here at XISS and specially the social service field work sessions helped him see the corporate world a lot more differently. He emphasised on creating a sustainable world where the underprivileged people get a rightful place. He said he strongly believes that humans are a source that manage the other resources rightly. Speaker’s address was presented by Prof. James Stoner. He emphasised on the need of changing the idea of seeing people as resources which can be exploited for profit-making. He believes the most important stake-holder in any organisation are the employees. He ended his speech by pointing that the most important thing for an HR manager is to be humble. A total of 3 papers were presented by the students of HRM. The paper on ‘CSR Strategies for a sustainable world’ (by Madhurima Banerjee & Karan Singh) dealt with what impact CSR strategies might have to create a sustainable world and to create awareness about the importance of CSR to protect the deteriorating natural resources. ‘Gender parity in employment’ (C. Suchismita, L. Nishita & R. Tulika) was the one which talked about a comprehensive critique on the existing measures at workplaces in India to secure decent and productive employment and income opportunities equally for all genders alike. ‘Gender mainstreaming and Gender Equality in the new market economy’ (Arunima Sengupta, Veedehi Patel & Snehana Bose) was one which showed the importance of human rights, dignity and gender equality practices and its impact on the productivity of different organizations.
The session for Dept. of Rural Management started with Prof. Dr. K. K. Bhagat welcoming the chairperson and speaker with bouquet. The theme of Rural Management Dept. was “RM for a sustainable World”. It was introduces by Rev. Dr. Denzil Fernandes SJ (Exec. Director ISI, Delhi), and Dr. Richa Chowdhri (Associate professor, IIT Patna) was the guest speaker. Rev. Dr. Denzil Fernandes SJ talked about the need for value orientation for all which will introduce a new paradigm in management education. Dr. Richa Chowdhari pointed that the environmental revolution has completely changed the ways of doing business. Earlier, it was only profit-driven but now sustainability is an inseparable part of the business agenda. A total of 5 papers were presented by the students. A paper on ‘Consumption and Conservation for a Sustainable Future’ (by Deblina Mazumdar) talked about the Renewable sources of energy and sustainable development. The paper on ‘Organic Farming for Sustainable Agriculture: Prospects and Challenges in Jharkhand’ (by Zubair Akhtar, Kumar Priya Ranjan & Rajendra Singh Bisht) presented the prospects and challenges of Organic farming in Jharkhand & highlighted the positive and profitable impact of organic farming on both man and Mother Nature. Few more papers were presented on topics ‘Gujarat Earthquake, 2001 and its impact on sustainability of livelihood of common people’ (By Kumar Aman), ‘Social Entrepreneurship And Sustainable Development’ (by Rekha Kumari Nayak) and ‘Commoditization of Tribal Lands and its Sustainability:
Context and realities from the Urban Slum of Kathar Gonda’ (by Ankit Choudhary).

XISSMarketing-Finance & IT paper presentation

Post lunch, the students of Marketing and Finance had their paper presentation under the theme ‘Sustainable Outcomes through Marketing & Financial Management Lessons’. Prof. Arana Kausar welcomed the Chairperson and Speaker with bouquet and introduced the speakers. Ms. Asha W. Biswas (Dy. GM in charge HR, MECON Ltd) was the chairperson and the speaker was Ms. Archana Sahay (CSR & Inclusion for India and abroad, Thomson Reuters). The speaker started his speech by explaining how and why is sustainability gaining so much exposure. He said, earlier CSR was part of Corporate office only but now is entering HRD also. He said the idea is to develop global leaders who can go for sustainable development. He pointed out that there are four key areas that need equal focus- Career, Family, Myself and Society. Many students presented their paper”. A paper on ‘Green Marketing Mix strategies for promoting Apparels among consumers in eastern parts of India’ tried to ascertain the best green marketing practices with the consumers’ (by Nipun Jain) perspective, their feasibility, and projected impact on long-term business growth. ‘Ethics in Financial Reporting for Successful Corporate Governance’ ( by Diksha Vijayvergia & Kritika Tekriwal ) showed why it’s important for companies to know and follow GAAP- generally accepted accounting principles. ‘The concept of Work from home for sustainability in 21st century business corporate’ ( By Astha Tiwari ) raised a very hot topic of working from home and tried to examine its mutual benefits for employees as well as the employers. Other papers were ‘Importance of Financial Decisions in making Business Sustainable’ ( by Shreysee Banka ), ‘Ethics in Financial Practices and Reporting ( by PragyaTantia & Manisha Rathod ), ‘A study on the green marketing practices & its effect in Indian Market’ ( by Ravi Kumar, Rajan Kumar & Ashutosh Chaudhary ), ‘Implementing Management study oriented towards empowering women through Entrepreneurship possible’ ( by Saloni Jalan ), ‘Sustainable Business practice in Telecom Industry- A step towards GREEN Digital India’ ( by Vishal Kumar Verma ) and ‘Can Indian Management Institutes Facilitate Key- Knowledge retention? A Perspective on Sustainable, Education-based Knowledge Organisations’ ( by Abhilash Acharya and NamrataDasgupta ).XISSThe theme for Dept. of Information Technology was “Information and Communication technologies for achieving Sustainable Development Goals”. Dr. Prof. P. K Barhai (Former Vice-Chancellor, BIT, Mesra, Ranchi) was the chairperson and the guest speaker was  Anil Kumar Choudhury  (Senior Manager (Electrical), MECON Ltd.). Dr. Prof. P. K Barhai expressed his happiness and gratitude on being invited to XISS.  Anil Kumar Choudhury talked about the role of ICT for SDGs but the challenges that still prevail in achieving it. He talked about the use of ICT for eradicating hunger and poverty. In his speech, Mr. Choudhury talked about the prevalence of ICTs in Energy Sector and renewable energy growth. He concluded his presentation by pointing out the challenges of ICT for promoting sustainable development. Students of IT dept. presented their papers on topics such as ‘Achieving Sustainable Development Goals using Computer Vision’ ( by Ritika Selot and Akshat Gupta), ‘Green cloud computing for sustainable development’ (by Shishir Kumar Mayank and Komal Kumari) and ‘Recycle management through Information Technology’ (by Jayati Jyotika, Madhuri Kumari and Ashlash Srivastav). OtherPapers were ‘Implications of LBP (Linear Binary Pattern) and Discrete Cosine Transform under MATLAB for Sustainable Development (by T. VenkatShashank) and ‘Sustainable Development through Information and Communication Technology- Case studies and best Practices (by ChandniKhatoon and Ananta Nandnia).

The day concluded with a Valedictory Session in which all the paper presenters were provided with certificates and mementoes. It ended with a vote of thanks by Dr. Fr. Ashok Ohol, SJ. The rapporteur’s report was presented by Dr. Shyamal Gomes, Dr. Anant Kumar and students representatives from all five departments
