Your heart is one of the key pieces of your circulatory system. As it beats, your heartpumps blood around your body. As it travels through your blood vessels, blood brings needed oxygen and nutrients to cells and carries away waste products.
If you look closely at the heart, you’ll see it’s actually like two pumps in one. The right side of the heart receives blood from the body and pumps it to the lungs. The left side does the opposite: it receives blood from the lungs and pumps it to the rest of the body.
If you use an average of 80 beats per minute, your heart beats about 4,800 times per hour. That’s a whopping 115,200 times per day. Over the course of a year, your heart would beatabout 42,048,000 times! If you live to be 80 years old, your heart would have beaten approximately 3,363,840,000 times! That’s over 3 billion heartbeats!
