Governor, Jharkhand motivated and interacted with Children on World Children’s Day

Ranchi, Jharkhand  | November | 20, 2020 ::  UNICEF child reporters were joined by the Honourable Governor,  Droupadi Murmu, as they commemorated the 30th anniversary of the United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) at the Raj Bhawan in Ranchi.
Child reporters Janki Kumari, Farheen Parween and Mohammad Kaif interacted with the Honourable Governor today and shared their stories and the actions children have taken during COVID-19 to spread awareness on COVID-19 safe behaviour, stopped child marriages and promoted child rights and education in their community.
Interacting with the children, Smt Droupadi Murmu said, “I have been celebrating World Children’s Day with our Bal Patrakars every year on the 20th of November and I am sure if we give them a platform to speak, they can spread the message of hope, education, inclusion and protection for all children in the community. We are pleased to interact with children and hear from them about their experience. The children of Jharkhand are the future leaders, teachers, doctors and architects of development. These children are the pillars of the state. We strive to promote child rights. The Government has already taken many initiatives for children – for their health, nutrition and education and we will keep working with the community to ensure that we contribute in meeting UN’s 2030 Agenda of Sustainable Development and for the cause of children. I wish all children a very happy Children’s Day.”

Prasanta Dash, Chief of Field Office, UNICEF Jharkhand said, “We have gathered today to remind ourselves about the importance of child rights and to build on the foundations laid by the UN 31 years ago. We have to work together because the government’s efforts alone will not help us ensure these rights. We all have to collaborate for the benefit of children.”

These children have been a part of UNICEF’s Child Reporter’s programme. UNICEF has been running the child reporters programme in the State since 2009. “This year, over 550 child reporters from five blocks of Ranchi have been enabled with information on child rights and these children have been spreading awareness about various SDGs – such as importance of nutrition, health, preventing child labour and promoting education and preventing child marriages. Many children during the pandemic have also taken actions to help the community such as stitching masks from sarees and distributing them and reminding people to follow safety protocols for preventing COVID-19,” said Ms Astha Alang, Communication, Advocacy and Partnership Officer, UNICEF Jharkhand
World Children’s Day (WCD) is a global day of action for children, by children, marking the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) on November 20 in 1989. In Jharkhand, a week of activities and events are being rolled out leading up to WCD.
The Governor’s House in Ranchi, Jharkhand has also been illuminated in blue under the #Go Blue campaign in solidarity for child rights and the impact of COVID-19 on children’s lives.
