Guwahati.| November | 16, 2019 :: Journalist Association of Assam , JAA collaboration with National Union of Journalist India, NUJI organized a function to observe the countrywide celebration of National Press Day.
In this connection a Meeting was held at the conference hall of the Rashtriya Khabar North East Correspondent office, Guwahati where appointed speaker and National Vice President of NUJI Bhupen Goswami delivered the key note speech on this year’s theme , “Ethics in Journalism. “With its commitment to uphold truth, probity, and objectivity, media is helping in building up a just and corruption-free society,” Goswami said. Inthe last 12 years, 11 media houses and 877 journalists have been attacked, reported IFJ. So we need a protection act immediately, goswami added .Several other speakers including Senior Journalist Sudip Sarma Chaudhury, Sabyasachi Sharma, Dipamoni Deka and Rakesh Kumer ,Anjan Bora,Kanak Hazarika while greeting the media people urged upon them to work for the society just like a honey bee who collects sweet honey from the core of the flowers and at the same time it can pinch hard whenever situation demands. Earlier Presiding over a meeting Journalist Association of Assam President Dhirendra Nath Chakravartty spoke on the significant role of the press in building a society with positive thought and creative writing. “ A society or a nation will become healthy and prosper in real sense only when their journalism is strong and positive The media is called the fourth pillar of democracy. It is said that journalists are a mirror of society, which brings out the truth even in adverse circumstances..” , Chakravartty said .The NUJI and JAA reiterated its demand for a Journalists Protection Act to ensure safety and end “impunity” for attacks on journalists.A statement from unions said that “the media is now the nerve centre of our society” and that it plays a vital role in disseminating information to the people.
